Murder Attempt on Colleague - Statement by the Chief Constable
13 May 2008
Colleagues
Last night terrorists tried to murder one of our colleagues.
Thankfully, they did not suceed.
However, our colleague was injured and is being treated in hospital. The extent of his injuries will become clearer throughout today.
Our thoughts are with him and his family.
This was a cowardly attack. The actions of those responsible are in stark contrast with the commitment of the officer who, like you, works on a daily basis to keep others safe. It is also in contrast to the actions of the members of the community who came to the officer's assistance.
The terrorists did not win in the past, and they will not win now.
Nevertheless, they do pose a threat. It is important that all of us are aware of our personal security and the security of those who work with us. Please keep that in mind at all times.
This reminder about security has been echoed by the Police Federation in a public statement this morning. That statement also urges the wider community to support the Police Servive in bringing about the end of all terrorist activity.
Those officers charged with investigating this crime will welcome that support.
Finally, always remember that it is you as police officers and staff who have stepped up to the mark to serve the people of Northern Ireland. That takes courage and determination. I am proud of all that you do to make our country a safer place.
Thank you.
