Statement From The PFNI Re Full-Time Reserve
The Police Federation for Northern Ireland has reacted with caution to the news that the Full-Time Reserve are to be retained until at least April 2005.
The Federation believes that the Full-Time Reserve are crucial to the delivery of effective policing and that they will be needed well beyond 2005.
It is our view that the decision on the future of the Full-Time Reserve should be reviewed in the run up to 2005 and its implementation shelved if there is no improvement in the security or civil disorder situation.
Above all we remind everyone that the Patten Report stipulated that the decision must be made by the Chief Constable alone - in other words must be free of political horse-trading or interference in his operational judgement.
The bald fact is that we have not enough police officers to provide a full policing service.
