Statement from Ms Dorcas Crawford of the Belfast solicitors Edwards and Company, representing the Police Federation in Northern Ireland. This is a reaction to the judgement in case brought in London against the Ministry of Defence by soldiers concerning the employer's duty of care in cases of trauma. The case was lost.
'The judgement is dismaying for these clients and from a personal and professional point of view we are disappointed.
'However, in terms of our case for Northern Ireland police officers, there are some very significant and positive indications.
'In general terms the London case concerned criticism of the system in place and the judgement is largely based on the view that the system was effective and adequate.
'The difference in the Northern Ireland case is, and always has been, that for a very long time, the RUC had no system at all. We believe that on the basis of today's judgement that this would clearly amount to breach of the employer's duty in the case of Northern Ireland police officers.'
