CONVALESCENT HOME
The Benevolent fund pays £2.73 per member per month towards the Convalescent Homes, out of your monthly subscriptions of £8.23. There is a Home at Harrogate and another at Auchterarder, Scotland and they are available to subscribing members and retired officers. It offers excellent physio and related treatment under expert guidance and included in the package is:-
- 12 days free convalescence for Serving Officers - 7 days for Retired members
- free travel
- free travel and subsistence for serving officer's spouse up to 3 days
There is up to a 6 week waiting list for the home and your initial application should be made direct to the Federation Office with the Home Administrator (028 9076 4215).
The Fund itself depends on contributions from members' salaries, donations from the public and donations from our colleagues fund raising at home and abroad. We have never asked the public by way of appeal for funds. In 1970, when the Fund started, it paid out £894. We have come a long way since then.
To avail of its services, any serving officer should be a subscribing member.
At Christmas, incidentally, the Fund sells Christmas cards bearing the RUC Crest. These are available from the fund through the Federation Office. There are also have various badges on sale which include the well known Rupert collection.
The Management Committee has, as was mentioned earlier, purchased apartment accommodation. This is a tremendous step forward for a Fund that started with nothing. It shows that the Committee, whilst dealing with the current situation has the vision to look to the future to improve the lot for our members in need.
Over the years the Committee has worked hard on our behalf and its efforts, within the Management of the Fund, have achieved much to alleviate the pain and suffering our Police 'Family' has endured. The purchase of apartments is now a visible recognition of this achievement, an achievement we should all be proud of - and we are.
