THE CHANCE TO PAY TRIBUTE TO YOUR COLLEAGUES

BRAVERY AWARDS 2021

As Chairman of The Police Federation for Northern Ireland, I am proud to announce the launch of our inaugural Bravery Awards. These awards will recognise officers who have carried out acts of bravery within the last two years, both on and off duty.

Having secured sponsorship from Police Mutual and H3, these awards will culminate in a Gala Dinner to be held in early 2021 where members of the policing family will gather to pay a fitting tribute to our remarkable colleagues.

In my 32 years in policing, I have been continually amazed and humbled at the courageous and selfless acts of bravery carried out by my colleagues in delivering policing across Northern Ireland. We know from hard-won experience that our men and women are well used to going the extra mile. They don’t seek out recognition; in fact, they shun the limelight. For them, going above and beyond is just part of what they do.

Policing in Northern Ireland has a lot to celebrate. We all know how officers, in their own time, have made visits to victims of crime to provide solace and advice. They, too, are mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters and know what it means to many in distress or pain to be offered a caring hand.

The job of being an officer is fraught and challenging. There is a ‘severe’ terrorist threat in place for the past ten years in Northern Ireland, but our colleagues go about their work undaunted and undeterred.

I make no apology for saying openly that our officers are outstanding examples of what true policing is all about. They are professional, resourceful and reliable and could show forces the world over valuable lessons about everyday policing.

These awards are distinctive in that they allow you the opportunity to nominate your colleagues and peers who you believe have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

This recognition event will span across all five PFNI Board areas with one award honoured per regional area and one overall winner. We welcome nominations from all areas of the service for both individuals and teams and encourage you to participate to recognise the unsung heroes in our workforce.

Nominations are now open and I would encourage officers’ right across the five Board areas to actively participate to make this event a resounding success.
